SC orders CBI probe into Manipur 'extra-judicial killings' during 2000-12

New Delhi, July 14 (PTI): The Supreme Court on Friday ordered the CBI to probe the alleged extra-judicial killings carried out by the Army, the paramilitary Assam Rifles and the Manipur Police in the insurgency-hit state during 2000-2012. Lalit asked the director of the Central Bureau of Investigation to appoint a team of officers to conduct the probe into the alleged killings. The alleged extra-judicial killing cases in Manipur are not cases of massacre, rather these are cases of military operations,” the Union government had told the court. It had alleged that district judges who were locals had conducted the inquiries into the alleged killings and their local bias went against the armed forces. The apex court had earlier asked the Centre to segregate the cases related to the armed forces from the list of 265 incidents of extra-judicial killings in Manipur.
