SC issues notice to Centre, Maharashtra in plea challenging abortion laws


Photo: MintNew Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday issued notice to the centre and the Maharashtra government in a plea challenging the current abortion law which restricts the time period for a woman to avail of abortion services at 20 weeks. Currently, an amendment proposed in 2014 to the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act is pending before the Parliament. Khehar, Kurian Joseph and Arun Mishra heard the plea asked the centre and state to file their replies. The amendment would allow termination between 20-24 weeks, done in good faith, by the competent authority. Advocate Colin Gonsalves, who appeared for the petitioner said that severe foetal anamoly is a ground for termination.
