New Delhi, Feb. 22 (Agencies): All local authorities have to set up common effluent treatment plants and industrial units discharging untreated waste into water bodies have three months to clean up their act, the Supreme Court said on Wednesday. The bench said the pollution control boards should inspect the industrial units after three months to check if they have complied. If industrial units do not have functional PETPs, then they will not be allowed to function any more, the court said. The bench directed the state PCBs to ask the power utilities to disconnect the power supply to the defaulting industrial units till they have effluent treatment plants in place. The apex court also asked local or municipal authorities to set up common effluent treatment plants within three years after acquiring land and completing other formalities.
