The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed all states and union territories to upload first registration reports (FIR) on their official website within 24 hours after they are filed saying it will protect the interests of the accused and their families. A bench of justice Dipak Misra and justice C Nagappan, however, exempted the state police from uploading the FIRs related to terror, insurgency and sexual offences against women and children. It said such states could take a maximum of 72 hours for uploading the complaints. The bench, however, made it clear that the delay “per say” will not be considered by courts to grant an accused anticipatory bail. The PIL referred to a decision of the Delhi high court in which the city police was directed to upload FIRs on its website within 24 hours of being registered.
