NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court refused on Friday to interfere with the Madras high court's stay on provisions of the Centre's May 23 notification banning sale and purchase of cattle for slaughter from markets.The apex court, however, modified an earlier order and vacated its stay on the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act ( Case Property Animals Rules 2017). This paves the way for the implementation of the Livestock Market Rules , except Rule 22, which was stayed by the Madurai bench of the Madras HC.The case property animals rules 2017 notified by the Centre on May 23 could also be implemented with the apex court vacating its stay. "We are disposing of the petition before us. The stay order of the Madras high court... will remain as it is. The Centre had told the court that it would come up with the amended notification.SC to hear Maha plea on beef banThe Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear the Maharashtra government's plea for revival of a provision of law that made it an offence to carry or keep beef at home in the state, which was struck down by the Bombay high court as it held Section 5D of the Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act, 1995 unconstitutional.A bench of R K Agrawal and Abhay Manohar Sapre issued notice on the state government's appeal challenging the HC judgement.
