A number of South African commentators and opposition parties have called on the country and its other Brics partners - Brazil, India and China - to take a harsher stance against Russia. At the end of February in an unprecedented move, Russia invaded neighbouring Ukraine, citing the country is being run by neo-Nazis while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is Jewish. Thus far, the South African government has been hesitant to choose a side in the conflict, instead calling on the invasion to end through diplomatic means.
