Toronto's main index soared more than 150 points on Tuesday, partly on the strength of gold as well as strong earnings from a number of American companies. The S&P/TSX composite index advanced 155.73 points to 14,752.25, lifted by gold sector gains of more than three per cent. In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average gained 75.54 points to 18,161.94 and the S&P 500 rose 13.10 points to 2,139.60. Elsewhere in commodities, the more heavily traded December crude contract gained 25 cents to US$50.62 per barrel, while the November crude contract gained 35 cents to US$50.29 per barrel. November natural gas rose 1.9 cents to US$3.26 per mmBTU and December copper contracts were relatively unchanged at US$2.11 a pound.
