Ryu’s value to the Blue Jays has gone beyond the mound

The Blue Jays didn’t get the numbers they were hoping for out of Hyun-Jin Ryu, but that doesn’t mean his $80-million (U.S.) contract was a bust. In an ideal world, the Jays would have gotten more quality innings along the way, but apparently that’s not going to happen. The Jays announced Tuesday that Ryu will soon have surgery on his left elbow and is expected to miss the remainder of the 2022 season. That’s water under the bridge after the Jays cut a big cheque, which should expand the Jays’ options this off-season and beyond. His signing was a smart business deal that paid off in some ways, backfired in others, and is one the Jays wouldn’t change, even if they could.
