Ryanair released more than 10 million tonnes of greenhouse gases last year, making the airline one of the biggest carbon polluters in Europe. Emissions by the airline increased by almost 6pc on 2018 and by close to 33pc since 2013. To put Ryanair's emissions into perspective, Ireland as a whole emitted 60 million tonnes of greenhouse gases last year. Ryanair was not the only airline to increase emissions - 14 of the top 20 polluting airlines also emitted more carbon. Emissions from peat-powered plants at West Offaly and Lough Ree came to just over 1.6 million tonnes.
