Ryan touts accomplishments but urges continued work on poverty, debt and immigration


Retiring House Speaker Paul Ryan delivers his farewell address in the Great Hall of the Library of Congress in Washington on Wednesday. In his remarks, Ryan lamented the state of American politics. He recounted his selection as Mitt Romney’s vice presidential nominee in 2012 and being drafted to become speaker in 2015. In the audience were dozens of House members and Republican aides, including Ryan confidantes past and present. One senator attended, South Carolina Republican Tim Scott, a former House member whom Ryan singled out in his speech for his antipoverty work.
