Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with his North Korean counterpart Ri Yong Ho on Thursday in Pyongyang, a trip seen as an attempt by Moscow to make its voice heard in its neighbour state’s new push for diplomacy. Lavrov’s visit comes ahead of a planned summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who has also made recent diplomatic overtures to Seoul and Beijing. After his arrival, Lavrov met with Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho and others at an assembly hall in the capital. Russia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement earlier they would discuss bilateral issues as well as the overall situation on the Korean Peninsula. Kim has already met twice with China’s President Xi Jinping and South Korean President Moon Jae-in.
