The punishment comes after Russia were found guilty of systematic drug cheating across a range sports over several years. WADA also discovered that Russia’s own Anti Doping Agency had tampered with laboratory data relating to athletes’ test results. Yuri Ganus, the head of Russia’s anti-doping agency, even confirmed that ‘thousands’ of entries had either been altered or deleted altogether. At the Winter Olympics in South Korea in 2018, 168 Russian athletes competed as ‘Independent Olympians’.
