Friday 24, 2023 marked exactly a year since Russia invaded Ukraine in a “special military operation" to "demilitarise and denazify" the former USSR partner. Russia, one of the biggest oil producers in the world, dropped from the daily oil supply chain as traders, shippers and financiers shunned it as the war intensified, igniting the high prices. Putin warned in December that the war "could be a lengthy process", but his depleted forces and a determined West to support Ukraine win the war leaves little to be desired. China has never criticised Russia for the war and has avoided calling it an invasion. As the Russia-Ukraine conflict enters its second anniversary, it remains to be seen whether Putin will accept defeat and end the biggest invasion in history since the Second World War.
