After a subordinate forces a decision to quarters, the captain, convincingly played by Russell Crowe, comes topside and the two have a short conversation. At this point, the fog has closed in and there’s no evidence that this young officer saw anything. “Are you sure?” the captain asks next, and the officer responds, “Yes sir” with forced confidence. And … at this point the officer breaks down into stuttering and admits he’s not sure what he saw.
