Rural real estate market feeling the pinch in South Canterbury

Parts of the rural real estate market are struggling in Canterbury and South Canterbury with key industry figures saying they are concerned about the effect of compliance regulations, anti-farming rhetoric and Environment Canterbury's (ECan) climate emergency declaration. South Canterbury's Federated Farmers president Jason Grant and rural estate agents say much of the gloomy projection in the latest Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (Reinz) rural report stemmed from environmental constraints and negative sentiments "coming out around farming". Grant said much of what was happening with real estate revolved around compliance and the negative press coming out around agriculture. "The declaration highlights what Environment Canterbury is doing in this space and draws attention to climate change. Lowndes said ECan was in consultation with communities in South Canterbury and continued to engage with them.
