Rupee records highest depreciation in six months


The Sri Lankan rupee (LKR) has yesterday (23) recorded its lowest rates against the US dollar in the last six months. The selling rate of the dollar has been reported as 193.05, indicating a depreciation of about 5.4% so far this year. For the first time in six months, the rupee surpassed 10 against the US dollar on 18 December and since then, it has been gradually depreciating. During the initial week of the lockdown alone, the rupee recorded a significant drop of 1.2%, hitting Rs. Since then, the rupee remained well above 190 against the US dollar until 15 May.
