Runānga chair quits, days after housing project dispute revealed

The head of Ngāi Tahu’s North Canterbury runānga has quit, less than a fortnight after Stuff revealed a government-funded housing project on iwi land had stalled. STUFF A new subdivision on Māori land north of Christchurch is like a ghost town. It has received $2.3 million from Te Puni Kōkiri (TPK), the Ministry of Māori Development, as part of the papakāinga community housing scheme. Reuben, the runānga chairman at the time, was also a trustee of Mana Waitaha Charitable Trust. Ngāi Tahu had been prohibited from building on their reservations since 1965 because Māori land had been converted for rural development.
