This year, Ruby Bridges saw some newly discovered video footage of her six-year-old self and was terrified for her. Awaiting her at the school gates was a phalanx of rabidly hostile protesters, mostly white parents and children, plus photographers and reporters. Bridges was one of six Black children to pass a test to gain access to formerly all-white schools. “I was really not aware that I was going into a white school,” she says. Her mother, who had been the chief advocate for her attending the white school, lost her job as a domestic worker.
