The firm was sold to a US firm in 1998 for £801million, and Sir Donald made £290million from the deal. Sir Donald married Elizabeth Shauna in 1959 and had three sons with her before they split in 1988. Sir Donald and his business partner, Ronald Hobson, became two of Britain's most successful entrepreneurs. Sir Donald was known for his love of the Navy and was devastated to be demobbed in 1949 after serving on HMS Leander. Afterwards, Sir Donald offered her full use of his £50million Leander G vessel, which she used for her Diamond Jubilee tour.
