It’s a German word, that translates as “an ache for distant places”. That ache for distant places has informed all the travels I’ve ever made since I was old enough to earn my own money. It seems inevitable that flying will become more expensive again, and with that higher cost, people will think more carefully about the future travel choices they make. But what might happen is that we all become more thoughtful about journeys that involve getting on a plane. I am still pulsing with fernweh; aching for distant places.
