Ron Dalton knows all too well the impact of going to prison for a crime you didn’t commit. Dalton, who is the co-chair of the non-profit organization Innocence Canada, says he’s angry at the federal government’s slow pace in creating an independent commission to review wrongful conviction cases. “I know what the real human cost is.”In 1989, Dalton was convicted of murdering his wife, Brenda, in the kitchen of their Gander, Nfld. Innocence Canada, a national non-profit organization, is largely run by volunteers, including lawyers and students who probe wrongful conviction cases. As the government has no set timeline for the creation of an independent commission, it should provide regular funding to Innocence Canada, Dalton said.
