Roma, produced and distributed by Netflix, had a short run in cinemas before being available on their streaming website. Spielberg’s comment echoes the critical views of Tim Richards, founder and CEO of the U.K.’s biggest cinema chain Vue. Knatchbull states that Curzon has been releasing their films simultaneously in cinemas and on their own streaming service, Curzon Home Cinema, for almost a decade. By pointing out that Roma should be considered a “made for TV” film, Tim Richards is really showing how the very definition of cinema is in effect changing itself. Or is cinema now also the films we watch alone on our computer screens or on TV screens with our families and friends?
