Rokeya University VC faces defamation case

Prof Dr AKM Nur-un-Nabi, the vice-chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, has been sued for defamation. Former general secretary of the university’s teachers’ association Prof Tabiur Rahman Prodhan filed the case on Thursday alleging that the VC had halted his promotion abusing power. The Rangpur court of First Senior Judicial Magistrate Tarique Hossain took the case into cognisance and set May 11 for hearing. The case says the VC intimated Prof Tabiur threatening to implicate him in a case filed by the university administration in 2014 over a blockade programme, and postponed his promotion. A Rangpur court quashed the case in 2015 but the VC remained firm on his stance not to give him promotion, which tarnished his image and caused him financial losses, the case says.
