Rohingya versus slum rights in top court

The apex court is hearing a batch of petitions moved by Rohingya Muslims and social activists challenging any move to deport the refugees. Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for Rohingya petitioners, denied that giving certain basic amenities to the Rohingya would amount to discrimination against the slum dwellers who lack them. Mehta objected, saying he had not said that slum dwellers were not being provided basic amenities. "Let me make it clear... what is being provided to them (slum dwellers) we will provide to these people also, without any discrimination," he said. "The slum dwellers, as citizens, have the first right of charity," he argued.
