Although long rumoured as a contender for the prize, Dylan was far down the list of predicted winners, which included such renown writers as Haruki Murakami and Ngugi Wa Thiong'o. Sara Danius, permanent secretary of the Nobel Academy, told a news conference there was "great unity" in the panel's decision to give Dylan the prize. "Bob Dylan writes poetry for the ear," she said.
