It doesn’t take a particularly astute observer to note the differences in the way the Ontario government handles its labour disputes with its teachers and its doctors. Indeed, there certainly seems to be an “if you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours” component to each recurring dispute between Ontario’s teachers and the Liberals — one that its doctors haven’t yet discovered. That means the province can pretty much wait this spat out, watching contently as the doctors fracture amongst themselves between the Ontario Medical Association and the newly formed Coalition of Ontario Doctors. If the same were to be thrust upon Ontario’s teachers, not only would there be literal marches in the streets (has the United Nations ruled on whether eliminating banked sick days is an act of war? As long as the public is prepared to wait this one out, it seems the Wynne Liberals are prepared to, too.
