A cyclist is facing a £100,000 legal bill after crashing into a pedestrian who was looking at her mobile phone while crossing a road. Robert Hazeldean, 38, a garden designer who was working for a charity at the time of the accident four years ago, faces bankruptcy after the pedestrian’s lawyers claimed costs far beyond the damages being sought. A judge at the Central London county court ruled that Mr Hazeldean was a “calm and reasonable road user” who had crossed a green light and attempted to warn pedestrians by shouting and using an air horn, but that he shared equal responsibility for the collision because he had a duty of care.
