A total of 3,214 people died in car crashes and traffic accidents on German roads in 2016, the Federal Statistics Office (destatis) announced on Friday. That was 245 fewer road deaths than in 2015, a drop of 7.1 percent. The chart shows road deaths in thousands since 1953. But people on the roads of Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania had the highest chances of dying, with 59 and 55 road deaths per 1 million inhabitants, respectively.
