OTTAWA—A rising number of Syrian child brides in the Middle East is seen as a tangible result of the $3 billion dollar gap between the needs of Syrians and the funds available. The Canadian in charge of UNICEF’s efforts to help Syrians in Jordan says the rising numbers can be linked to the toll that living in exile for seven years is taking. But Robert Jenkins says the funding crisis also plays a role — in 2017, the UN asked for US$4 billion and as of last month, only US$1 billion had arrived. He says that means there aren’t enough resources to properly address the needs of the most vulnerable refugees. Jenkins says the shortfall can also be linked to the prolonged conflict that’s seen five million Syrians registered as refugees and countless more displaced around the globe.
