On the eve of the Olympic Games, nearly 1.5 million people live in the favelas, the majority of them are Blacks. Rio's favelas were created in hillsides and swamps by fugitive African slaves in the late 18th century. The favela that overlooks Maracana Stadium, the main Olympic site, is a textbook example of the astounding impoverished living conditions.
