Six days into competition, the U.S. was doing what The Wall Street Journal projected it to do, leading the gold and overall medal races. The Americans won 16 gold medals and 31 overall in the Olympic pool in London, roughly one-third of their overall total. So while the Americans are leading the medal races, they are woefully behind some of their top competitors when it comes to diversity. Japan, which sat in third place in the medal races Thursday evening, wasn’t much better, getting 10 of its 19 medals in judo. That’s thanks largely to a swim meet that had produced 11 gold medals and 24 overall through Wednesday, with more likely on the way Thursday night.
