In only his second marathon ever, in slick, rainy conditions on Sunday, Rupp took the bronze medal in the men’s marathon, the first American hardware in the event in 12 years and in only his second attempt at the distance. He refocused on the marathon, a distance he has raced only once before, in February, to qualify for Rio. Eliud Kipchoge won gold in Sunday’s event with a time of in 2:08:44, giving Kenya a sweep of men’s and women’s marathon gold.
