Ringgit opens higher as US$ slips after FOMC minutes

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit extended its rally, opening slightly higher against the US dollar on Wednesday as the greenback weakened after the release of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting minutes overnight. At 8 am, the local currency edged up to 4.0425/0540 versus the dollar from Tuesday’s close of 4.0460/0505. "This strengthens the dollar’s yield and safe-haven appeal, weighing on emerging market currencies, including the ringgit,” he added. At the open, the ringgit traded higher against a basket of major currencies. It strengthened against the Japanese yen to 2.5850/5926 from 2.5948/5978 on Tuesday, rose versus the British pound to 5.4440/4595 from 5.4678/4738, and appreciated against the euro to 4.7479/7614 from 4.7621/7674.
