Rights watchdog, CCLA intervene in case of Black Metrolinx workers fired over ‘discriminatory’ background checks

The province’s human rights watchdog and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association are joining the case of two young Black Metrolinx transit safety dispatchers who lost their “dream” jobs over opaque, allegedly discriminatory police background checks. At issue are the mandatory Metrolinx police background checks, conducted by the Toronto Police Service, that came after both Mounsey and Taban had already been hired. The two believe that is the reason they failed the background checks. Metrolinx stopped using Toronto police for background checks in late 2019, after Mounsey and Taban were fired. The rights tribunal has the power to hold public hearings and can make legally binding orders.
