That incident following the Anzac test, which saw then-captain Jesse Bromwich and back-rower Kevin Proctor stood down for the World Cup, was the most extreme example. Richardson acknowledged how important the Maori culture is to the Kiwis and is something he has embraced, to the point of learning the haka. "An untried head coach is always a bit of a challenge but he's got an enormous character and an enormous will to win," Richardson said.
