A pensioner in Florida wrestled his puppy from an alligator’s jaws while clenching a cigar in his teeth. Richard Wilbanks, 74, leapt into the lake to fight the 2ft reptile after Gunner, a three-month-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel, was dragged underwater. “It came out of the water like a missile,” Mr Wilbanks said. Instinct took over.”The incident came to light last week after the Florida Wildlife Federation downloaded video from cameras on the edge of a refuge in Estero, southwest Florida. They saw Mr Wilbanks jump into the lake near his property.
