Review of 'one flexible day off' draft put on hold after committee chaos

Review of 'one flexible day off' draft put on hold after committee chaosTAIPEI, Taiwan -- Plans for a special committee meeting to review the controversial "one fixed day off, one flexible day off" (一例一休) bill were scrapped Thursday morning after lawmakers occupied the podium and the convener was a no-show. Hsu was quickly surrounded and shoved by angry KMT lawmakers, but the NPP maintained control over the podium. The KMT, NPP and People First Party all advocate a "two fixed days off" system that would move Taiwan closer to a conventional five-day work week. After meeting with the demonstrators, Kuomintang (KMT) lawmakers entered the committee room wielding placards and quickly swarmed the tables, chanting for the bill to be abolished. The standoff ended around 11 a.m. after DPP caucus whip Ker Chien-ming emerged from a closed-door party meeting and announced that review of the draft would be put on hold to allow for further negotiation and discussion.
