★★☆☆☆A joke! My eyeballs for a joke! There are so many moments in this, the seventh of the core X-Men movies (not including spin-offs and Deadpool films), where the material is crying out for a lighter, wittier, Avengers-style makeover. Jessica Chastain, for instance, pops up as a bleached-blond alien ambassador from the planet D’Bari who, in a scene of ridiculous solemnity, informs the psychic mutant Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) that the glowing lights that have just permeated her being are, in fact, “a pure and unimaginable cosmic force, and the spark that gave life to the universe”.
