Review: 'Velvet Buzzsaw' Doesn't Have Much Of An Edge

It’s difficult not to compare Velvet Buzzsaw with director Dan Gilroy and Jake Gyllenhaal's previous collaboration, the equally excellent and disturbing Nightcrawler. Gyllenhaal's sociopathic protagonist thrived in such an environment, rewarded by his willingness to venture beyond the bounds of human decency. And in Velvet Buzzsaw, Gilroy takes aim at the modern art scene, but doesn’t have a great deal to say, beyond poking fun at pretentious critics and condemning the commodification of art. Velvet Buzzsaw is aimless, offering half-hearted critiques of criticism and commercialism, but nothing concrete. Velvet Buzzsaw is not a bad film, but it’s a forgettable one; there isn’t much to see, beyond what the trailer already gave away.
