Review: Seduced by Youth in ‘Suntan,’ and Refusing to Let Go

Photo“Suntan” opens as a dumpy, raccoon-eyed but generally agreeable middle-aged physician named Kostis (Makis Papadimitriou) arrives on the Greek island of Antiparos. It’s a rainy winter, but a local roué promises that with the tourist season, opportunities for amorous activity will be practically overwhelming. Then summer comes, and with it one spectacularly attractive young patient, whose obnoxious coterie bulldozes into his office with her. When Anna, on what is clearly a youthful whim, indulges his desire, Kostis is astonished by what seems to be his vindication. “Suntan” has an undertone of resigned misanthropy, but for the most part, this isn’t a movie about what the filmmaker thinks of the characters and their milieu.
