★★★☆☆A friend of mine won’t go to see plays because she gets too agitated at the thought of the cast fluffing their lines. I dread to think how she’d respond to a night with Paul Merton and his longstanding ensemble of Richard Vranch, Lee Simpson, Suki Webster, Kirsty Newton and Mike McShane. Veterans of the Comedy Store Players and Whose Line Is it Anyway?, they make up their self-contained routines on the spot. Sometimes they soar: often as not when Merton is throwing in barbs with the same dry glee as he does on Have I Got News for You. If you can’t put up with a bit of egginess, this is not your omelette.
