Review: Four Women, Four Lifetimes, One Camera in ‘20th Century Blues’


As Danny explains during the TED Talk that opens Susan Miller’s heartfelt, slushy “20th Century Blues,” “It was the ‘70s. Along the way the women had children and shed lovers, earned degrees and fought for stature. Now the Museum of Modern Art has offered Danny a retrospective, and she wants to show the photos. Ms. Miller’s play, however, withholds its photographs until the very end. As the women gather for the 40th portrait and reminisce about their shared lives, Danny asks them to sign legal waivers.
