References to the original film have the audience whooping in delight, while the problematic, outdated elements are replaced by progressive plot twists, sometimes rather clumsily. Aladdin feels like what it is - a reboot motivated solely by money, rather than passion for the original property. Smith essentially embodies the tone of Disney’s live-action reboots; he’s consistent, likable, but never mind-blowing, his bland charm fueled by familiarity, the Fresh Prince taking a new form, but still the Fresh Prince. There’s nothing wrong with that, but it doesn’t lead to the creation of modern-day classics; live-action Aladdin is not as infinitely rewatchable as the original. Ultimately, Aladdin is a fun children’s film, and a trip down memory lane for their parents.
