Review: ‘The Wolves’: A Pack of Female Warriors, Each Determined to Score

PhotoGirl power is atomic in “The Wolves,” the incandescent portrait of an indoor soccer team that blasted open on Sunday night at the Duke on 42nd Street. The play begins, without preamble, in midchatter, as members of the Wolves, a suburban soccer team, do warm-up stretches on a green, green field of AstroTurf. After all, these lives are still in flux, and the soccer field is a crucible of sorts for personalities yet unformed. Nor does Ms. DeLappe traffic in easy routes to confrontations and climaxes that have been cleanly foreshadowed in early scenes. Even here, though, Ms. DeLappe shows her sophisticated grasp of exposition by indirection and of the telling, seemingly insignificant detail that wrings the heart.
