That’s the thing about school: When you’re in it, it is the world. And while the worlds of these white and black high school students aren’t entirely closed off, they only overlap so much. Kendale McCoy, a student in the marching band, says he has some white friends, but he can’t talk to them about race. The cheerleaders, who are largely black, are relegated to a remote end of the stands where more of the black students sit. One well-meaning white teacher, Aaron Podolner, strains so hard to relate to his black students that it gets awkward.
