Revenue tax restriction catches fewer high earners

A Revenue scheme designed to curb high-net-worth individuals’ use of tax reliefs and exemptions is catching fewer people. In a newly published report for 2023, Revenue says 127 people were covered by the restriction, generating an extra €13.6m in income tax. Adjusted income is Revenue’s calculation of a person’s income before certain tax reliefs are used to reduce their tax bill. Revenue said the €2.8m extra tax they paid was a 350pc increase on what would have been paid if there was no restriction. Of the 81 people, 45 who would not otherwise have paid income tax in 2023 were brought into the tax net.
