Revealed: How much political parties and politicians spent on social media ads ahead of elections


A total of €470,269 was spent on Meta-owned social media sites in the 90 days before polling day on June 7. Fine Gael spent just under €40,000 on Facebook and Instagram adverts, Fianna Fáil’s outlay was just under €23,000, the Green Party spent just under €20,000 and Labour spent approximately €13,000. Successful Fine Gael candidate ­Regina Doherty spent €17,185 on Meta social media advertising and Labour’s Aodhán Ó Ríordáin, who was the final Dublin MEP elected, spent €16,024. “Social media gave them a better understanding of what the local elections are for,” he added. “Going door-to-door was one of my stronger points as well, but social media went to a younger crowed,” he said.
