Return of missing Stonehenge core brings archaeologists closer to solving mystery of its origin

A missing piece from Stonehenge’s iconic sarsen stones has been returned to the prehistoric monument 60 years after it first disappeared, bringing archaeologists closer to uncovering one of history’s best-kept secrets. The stone traveled with him to a number of states in the U.S., finally settling in Florida. However on his 90th birthday, Philips wished to return the fragment back to the charity and sent the core back with his sons, Robert and Lewis. Stonehenge’s smaller bluestones are known to have been brought from the Preseli Hills in south-west Wales, but the origin of the much larger sarsen stones remains unknown. Based on initial results of the analysis, David Nash, lead project researcher, believes the sarsens may have come from multiple locations.
