To address the perennial water-logging, activists of a civic platform have made calls for restoring and reclaiming of 70 canals in Chittagong. ‘Civic Movement for Restoring Canal and River’ made the call at a press conference held at Chittagong Press Club on Saturday. The platform called for demarcating the actual boundaries of the canals, freeing the canals from the clutches of the grabbers and going tough on indiscriminate polythene dumping. It also blamed the fast disappearance of open spaces that were used for retaining rainwater or storm water for the perennial water-logging. “Proper irrigation system can only address the chronic water congestion here.”
