Statistics by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) indicate that Irish households threw away an estimated 221,000 tonnes of food in 2021. A report published in 2019 found that more than 66 per cent of food waste from the food services sector is avoidable, meaning the food is edible. It found that hotels have the highest level of food waste and that 11 per cent of wasted food is vegetables. The annual cost of food waste to this sector is estimated to be more than €300 million.
